Squint in Adults
Most adults with squint have been told two things: that nothing can be done now, and that fixing it would only be for looks. Both are usually wrong.
“You are too old to fix it”
This mixes up two different things.
Making a lazy eye see better really does only work in childhood. But straightening the eyes can be done at any age.
Eye muscles can be operated on throughout life. Adults have their squint corrected decades later, using the same operation done in children.
Why it is not a cosmetic operation
Straightening an adult squint fixes real, measurable problems.
A squint that is new needs checking quickly
A squint that appears for the first time as an adult is a different situation. Get it seen quickly, especially if it came on suddenly or you are seeing double.
It can come from nerve weakness, thyroid problems, diabetes, injury or other conditions. The first job is to find out why it happened — not just to measure it.
Treatment options
- Prisms in your glasses — correct small squints and stop double vision, no surgery needed.
- Correcting your glasses power, if that is adding to the problem.
- Botox injection in selected cases, including some nerve weakness while it recovers.
- Surgery for larger or long-standing squints. Sometimes we use adjustable stitches so the alignment can be fine-tuned shortly afterwards while you are awake.
If the squint is caused by another health condition, we treat that first and let the eyes settle before planning surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it too late to fix a squint I have had since childhood?
No. Eye muscles can be operated on at any age. Adults get their squint straightened decades later, with the same operation used in children.
The confusion is this: the chance to make a lazy eye see better is limited to childhood. The chance to straighten the eyes is not. Surgery will align your eyes even if the vision in one eye cannot be improved — and that is usually still worth it.
Is adult squint surgery cosmetic?
No. It treats double vision, eye strain, head tilting and neck pain, and it often improves how the two eyes work together.
This matters for insurance too. Records showing double vision, lazy eye or an abnormal head posture support your claim.
Will I see double after the surgery?
You may, for a while, as the brain adjusts to the new position. It usually settles.
If you already have double vision, stopping it is often the main point of the operation. We check this beforehand so there are no surprises.
Can adult squint be treated without surgery?
Sometimes. Prisms built into your glasses can correct small squints and stop double vision. Correcting your glasses power helps if that is part of the problem.
Larger or long-standing squints usually need surgery for a lasting result.
I suddenly developed a squint as an adult. Is that serious?
Get it checked quickly, especially if it came on suddenly or you are seeing double. This is different from a squint you have had since childhood.
A new squint in an adult can come from nerve weakness, thyroid problems, diabetes, injury or other conditions. The first job is finding out why it happened.
Will I be asleep during the operation?
Adults can have either general anaesthesia or numbing drops, depending on the case.
Sometimes we use adjustable stitches, which lets us fine-tune the alignment shortly afterwards while you are awake and can say what you see. It is usually day care — home the same day.
