Squint Surgery

Squint surgery adjusts the small muscles that move the eye, bringing both eyes back in line. We suggest it when glasses, patching and exercises cannot straighten the eyes on their own.

Before we suggest surgery

Surgery is not the first step. We make sure these are sorted first.

Glasses tried properly
Any glasses power is corrected and given time to work. Some squints straighten with glasses alone.
Lazy eye treated
Operating on an eye that still has lazy eye risks the squint coming back.
Measurements stable
The angle is measured more than once to check it is not still changing.
Cause identified
We confirm what is causing the squint and that it is not getting worse.

On the day

Children are asleep under general anaesthesia. Adults may be asleep or awake with numbing drops, depending on the case.

It is usually a day-care procedure. You come in the morning, the operation takes about 45 to 90 minutes depending on how many muscles are involved, and you go home the same day once the child is awake and comfortable.

Recovery — what is normal

The eye will look red and bloodshot afterwards. This is the thing families worry about most, and the thing that matters least.

  1. 1
    Day of surgery
Home the same day, once the child is awake, comfortable and drinking.
  2. 2
    First week
Redness, watering and a gritty feeling. Eye drops are given on a reducing schedule.
  3. 3
    Back to normal
Most children return to school in about a week. Avoid swimming, dust and eye rubbing for the period we advise.
  4. 4
    Next few weeks
Redness fades slowly. Slight pinkness can stay for a couple of months. This is normal healing.
  5. 5
    Follow-up visits
We check the alignment and healing. A small amount of settling is expected and already allowed for in the plan.

Call us if

  • Pain is getting worse instead of better
  • Redness improves and then gets worse again
  • There is thick discharge
  • Vision suddenly drops
  • Double vision does not settle

What to expect, honestly

Squint surgery is safe and usually works well. It is still surgery, so here is the full picture.

  • A second operation is sometimes needed. Muscles and healing vary between people. This is a normal part of squint treatment, not a mistake.
  • Double vision can happen for a while as the brain adjusts. It usually settles.
  • Surgery straightens eyes, it does not sharpen vision. Lazy eye has to be treated before, not after.
  • Rarer risks like infection or over-correction are explained to you individually before you consent.

What affects the cost

There is no single price for squint surgery, because it is not one fixed operation. Cost depends on:

  • How many muscles need work — based on how far the eye turns
  • One eye or both
  • Type of anaesthesia — children need general anaesthesia

Insurance

Squint surgery is usually covered, because it is not a cosmetic operation. It treats double vision, eye strain and how the two eyes work together.

Claims go through more easily when there is double vision, lazy eye or an abnormal head posture on record. Some policies still treat it as cosmetic, especially for adults — so get pre-approval before surgery rather than claiming afterwards.

We can give you the medical papers your insurer asks for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the eye taken out of the socket during squint surgery?

No. This is the question almost every family asks, and the answer is no — the eye stays in place throughout.

Six small muscles move each eye from the outside. The surgeon reaches them through the thin clear skin on the white of the eye, then either moves a muscle further back to weaken its pull or shortens it to strengthen it. Nothing is cut on the black part of the eye, and nothing goes inside the eye. The stitches dissolve on their own.

How much does squint surgery cost in Ahmedabad?

It depends on how many eye muscles need work, whether one eye or both are operated on, and the type of anaesthesia. We can only give a real figure after examining the eyes.

Is squint surgery covered by health insurance?

Usually yes. Squint surgery is not a cosmetic operation — it treats double vision, eye strain and how the two eyes work together. Insurers cover it more easily when there is double vision, lazy eye or an abnormal head posture on record.

Some policies still treat it as cosmetic, especially for adults. Get pre-approval before surgery rather than claiming afterwards. We can provide the medical papers your insurer needs.

Is squint surgery painful?

You do not feel the operation. Children are asleep under general anaesthesia. Adults may be asleep or awake with numbing, depending on the case.

Afterwards the eye feels gritty and sore — like something is in it — rather than sharply painful. This settles in about a week. Simple painkillers are usually enough.

How long is recovery after squint surgery?

Most children go back to school in about a week.

The eye stays red much longer. Redness fades over a few weeks, and slight pinkness can last a couple of months. This worries families far more than it should — it is normal healing.

What is the success rate of squint surgery?

Squint surgery is a safe, well-established operation and most patients get a good result.

Expect a big improvement rather than a guaranteed perfectly straight eye from one operation. Some patients need a second operation to fine-tune it. That is a normal part of squint treatment, and we tell you this before surgery, not after.

Will squint surgery improve my child's vision?

Surgery straightens the eyes. It does not make a lazy eye see better.

That is why we treat lazy eye first, with glasses and patching. Surgery then fixes the alignment, stops double vision and improves head posture.

At what age can a child have squint surgery?

There is no fixed minimum age. Squint present from the first months of life is often operated on early, so the eyes can learn to work together.

The right timing depends on the type of squint, whether it is stable, and whether glasses and patching have been tried — not on age alone.
